Maybe this page should be re-named the 'Tucked away in the sports section somewhere after the horse racing page' as Motorsport rarely appears on the back page of U.K. newspapers. It would take Lewis Hamilton to win a World Championship (which amazingly he did in 2008!) or 'Our Nige' to decide to come out of retirement before that would happen! The editor has therefore used a considerable slice of licence in order to accomodate some images that are of a semi-sporting nature. (there's a pun there somewhere). The photos of MG M Types included here are 'permitted' as the car is really the sporting variant of the Minor, much as the Ulster is to the Austin Seven.
The Minor has been involved in competition since its launch and pre World War Two achieved some notable successes, particularly the 'White Minor' in the very capable hands of Barbara Skinner. This car competed in front of huge crowds at many of the famous pre-war hill climb venues, including Shelsley Walsh. Minors can still be seen competing in the U.K. today at the various VSCC events - hill climbs, driving tests, trials and even the odd sprint as the gallery below illustrates.
Notable post war exponents of Minor competition driving must include Eddie Wrigley, Rosemary Burke, Sue Woodward, Paul Rodgers and perhaps the most successful of them all, Clive Hamilton - Gould. (See his long lists of achievements in the wonderful book about the history of the LC&ES 'Light Car Journey' compiled by Tim Cork ISBN 0-9542876-1-4)
A number of PDF files are displayed below detailing the story of a 1933 Minor and its crew of two ladies who competed in the first Welsh Rally in July 1935. These items include official rally documentation together with a number of contemporary Autocar articles.
Two Minors took part in the 1930 MCC High Speed Trial - find out how they got on here.
Competitor number 64 driving a 1932 Fixed head Minor Saloon (GX 7952) climbs a hill at West Stonesdale, Yorks while taking part in the 1933 MCC London to Edinburgh Trial, which was held over the Whitsun Bank Holiday weekend.
