Garry Waiting and his friend John Hallas, hauled a deteriorating 1931 MG M-Type hulk from a bed of stinging nettles in 1981. Over the next five or six years, John, with Garry’s help, restored the car that became RLG 479. This photo of the restored ‘M’ was taken at Holker Hall in 1987 at an Octagon Car Club Driving Test event organised by the couple in the car, Garry and Marilyn W. Under their stewardship this annual event ran for a further 39 years. Garry’s involvement with RLG 479’s restoration was his introduction to the MG M Type, a model he continues to be associated with some 45 years later. RLG 479 was sold to a German buyer in 1995.
